Writing tip: Not everyone is reading and analyzing every single word of your story like you are. Every sentence doesn’t need to be perfect. Free yourself of the perfectionism that’s making doing what you love feel like a chore.
My students are up to something. They keep coming up to me and handing me pieces of fruit, and when I ask why, they just smile cryptically and say, “Don’t worry about it.”
Like, the apples I get. That’s a teacherly thing to give. But one of them just straight up handed me a grape.
I took a sick day today and sent an email to the first girl to hand me a piece of fruit, asking if I could have an explanation now.
Her response was to send me this meme:
That clarifies exactly nothing, thanks.
Walked into school today to an email from her saying: “There’s more to come, hope it doesn’t leave you *sour* (you’ll get that later).”
Ominous.
Just before my first class of the day, one of my students came floating in, a black cloak billowing behind her, hood pulled low over her eyes.
“An offering,” she said, handing me a plain white bag with a green ribbon.
Inside is this:
Life gave me a plastic lemon.
WE HAVE AN ANSWER!
Apparently this was the result of a number of my students playing Truth or Dare at a birthday party. I’m not sure which one of them came up with “I dare you to confuse Magistra by handing her a piece of fruit without explanation”, but I 100% approve of any thought process that ends with me getting free food.
I need y’all to know that while #metoo has been surging as a movement in south korea, the retaliation has been devastating.
The pence rule has been cited as a valid solution. Women are being plainly ignored in their workplace. Women are being pulled from business trips with male coworkers. Women are not being given job opportunities bc of potential exposure to male coworkers. Women are not being hired bc of the “danger” they pose to the men.
They’re not fixing the behavior of men. They’re blaming it all on women, and the women are being forced to bear the brunt of the repercussions.
The women are suffering for speaking out not just on a person by person basis of “you could’ve done better/you were seducing him”, but on a larger, systemically oppressive scale.
Rather than educating men to respect boundaries and just not sexually harass/assault women, they’re limiting the presence and mobility of women. They’re getting rid of the women in the workplace. Bc that solves the problem.
I know a lot of this is redundant, but I am angry. And embarrassed. And frustrated. When I heard about this, I was so, so disappointed. I wanted Korea to be better than this.
So please, be angry about this too. Spread it and let it be known that this is not okay. That this is unacceptable.
I know it has nothing to do with your interest in the country’s music or drama or other media/entertainment, but it is SO important that you not ignore this.
Because whenever anyone seriously tries to argue that POC fans (which for the record, I’m white) and anyone drawing POC Homestucks and advocating for more representation of people of color in fandom and media are the ones inserting race/racism into the discussion–
y’know, racism, that system by which, among other things, mostly-arbitrary categories of biological characteristics and cultural stereotypes are used to justify gross social, economic, and political inequality to the benefit of those in power, and which kind of exists fucking everywhere and doesn’t need help getting inserted into almost every aspect of people’s lives–
I always have to wonder if we’re even reading the same comic. Intentional analogy or not, that thematic ship has gone and fucking sailed.
And as promised, both messages anon sent me after the last ask I answered are included here for general mockery. Rest assured, they are as enlightened on issues of citizenship and how other people self-identify as they are on race as a whole:
Good job anon what a convincing argument you’ve crafted.
