Decided to put all the very good adventure boys together. :,,,,,,) I had to squeeze these out before the finale. I’m not ready for the Balance arc to end—it’s been a very rocky year and a half for me, but the show has been such a fun and safe mindspace to been in, and listening to it definitely made things easier to cope with. But the boys do deserve a happy ending, so I’ll just hang onto that for now.
First is of merle
when he was getting a mud bath and was telling lucrecia “I don’t
think pan really cares whether of not i’m, you know, his buddy or
not”.
The second is pan
grinning while he’s talking to merle
(assuming its the “you’ll always be my merle bit” and touching
merles shoulders while merle looks surprised.
Third is of magnus
and the power bear. “why do you want to be strong magnus? You want
to protect your friends, is that right?” while magnus says “they’re
not strong enough. I have to be”
4th is of
magnus looking beat up and appearing to be partly on the ground. He’s
gripping someones hand who is lifting him up.
Fifth is of taako.
Someone else is speaking offscreen “Why are you doing this taako?
Why aren’t you doing a a safer career?” Taako: “because i’m
worried no one else will have me”
6th is of
kravitiz kissing taakos forehead while taako is either laughing or
grinning with an open mouth. Both of their eyes are closed and
kravitiz looks like he’s in mid-transformation (the back of his jaw
is still bone). A blue light is surrounding them.
I think fanfiction is one of the most potent ways of dealing with the unknowability of other people because I think we as gay people are constantly struggling with that. I think one of the only things that stops us as human beings from going crazy is being able to intuit the minds of other people and predict within reason what they’re going to do by reflecting off our experiences. Like if someone stubs their toe we can imagine how they would feel (big pain) and how they would react (big yell) because that’s what we’ve done before. And when they DO react that way it validates the fact that our experiences are things shared by other people and that our mind doesn’t exist independently among automatons. But like when you’re gay and you constantly see characters who SHOULD be gay ending up as straight it messes with that confidence you’ve built up over the years. Seeing people you can relate to not behave the way you’d expect based on your experiences…eventually reinforces the fact that there’s something flawed in YOUR conciousness. There’s a lack of control and a helplessness there that’s really terrifying in a deep way. Like there’s something (epistemologically? existentially?) terrifying about being gay in a homophobic world that goes beyond the social experience of homophobia…but fanfiction acts as a balm to that and lets you like…manifest a reality where people behave the way you would behave and just the physical reality of having a document where your intution about someone is a concrete reality is like…deeply healing imo
you gotta remember that dirk started whiting out and handwriting funny names over horses in a pony pals book as an ironic gift for jane and that escalated to pasting over entire pages of the book with his own narrative because he got too consumed with the project.
anyway, when hal says “extensive papers” PLURAL, he means they could have submitted them as theses for phds.
