yOU’RE MAKING ME PULL OUT THE BIG GUNS, HUH
(a disclaimer: i am a very low functioning human being and i will forget people; i read lots and lots of fanfiction, and i’m inherently uncomfortable mentioning authors i don’t know or ones i don’t have, at the very least, a very common connection with (i.e. we’re mutuals, we’ve talked, yada yada) because i don’t want to associate myself with people who aren’t comfortable associating with me; i don’t like the idea of anyone feeling pressured to follow or notice me because i put them on a list, and i don’t want to make anyone unhappy with being put on a list by a stranger. it might be a bit weird, and i’m definitely projecting the whole disconnect with fandom culture, but i just don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable, so if you’re not on this list, i’m so so so sorry; feel free to say something in the ‘reply’ function, so people can check you out, as well! 😀 i also may forget people. i am so sorry. pls forgive me i have a very cute dog u can pap)
@transdimensional-void, aka sara, is genuinely one of those people that i’m hesitant to call a fanfic writer, because it feels so much more than that. they wrote that super long japan au called so many stars, but make lots and lots of other amazing and frankly breath taking worlds and creations; their characterization of dan and phil is more than i could ever ask for, their grasp on language and novella makes me foam at the mouth. (not to mention that sara is one of the sweetest people i’ve met, dealt and still dealing with me being a massive fangirl as well as anyone possibly could, and deserve a lot more recognition than they get, especially for fics other than so many stars.)
@thatsmistertoyou, aka michelle, wrote that one fic ‘if lost, return to phil,’ and continues bashing my head in with a pencil and a tupperware container of spaghetti. if lost return to phil was definitely the first fic i read from ~the phandom~ and i was instantly beyond impressed, and unsure what to do with the rest of my life. she handles her characters well, the dialogue is cutting and clever, and every word has a place, a function, and while i’m a serial skimmer when it comes to chunkier parts of fics, i never found myself scanning hers. i met her in real life before we were internet friends, and i promptly made a fool out of myself by yelling at her for constantly ruining my life via AO3. the bastard.
@dantiloquent, aka peej, is one of those writers that you squint aggressively whenever they post and you consider if tonight is the right night to reconsider human existence and sob into a carton of saltines. metaphoric and beautiful in ways john green soils himself about, peej’s ‘details of an astroid’ left me with a jaw firmly blowtorched to the ground, and tear-eyed at a ridiculous hour of the morning. i wrote them a 8 hour review where i considered it better than neil gaiman, then deleted the post out of shame. idk how we become friends, and idk if peejy even knows i wrote that post. glad it’s deleted. sucker
@phanwich, aka fizza, is definitely one of the lighter authors on this list? me, mr. i’ll take graveyard by neil gaiman to the grave, you can imagine just how pretentious and ridiculous i like my fanfic; fizza, however, tackles the other side of good writing, which is the fics that you read and it’s like watching an indie film. it’s concise and pretty, well characterized and well plotted, everything is right in place and perfectly thrilling at the same time, and yet when you finish it doesn’t leave you with the hanging feeling of having missed something – it’s clean and good writing, the type of thing i can read over and over and just snuggle up with for a good ‘before bed’ type of deal. v good. all my recs.
@hearteyeshowell, aka hunter, is the flip side of fizza. hunter’s fics are litted metaphors and heavy hearts, and holding your tears back because you’re scared you can’t see the screen. it’s the bone chilling type of writing where you don’t want to sleep because you’re stuck thinking about what you read, thinking of a continuation, thinking of where to go from here, and how to move on. the type of one-liners that stick with you for the rest of your fic reading life, hunter takes language and twists it just right, and makes it his.
@galaxyphan, aka whitney, is a mix of hunter and fizza. feel good to a point that i feel like i can survive reading it before i fall asleep, but just enough rub off from hunter that i severely regret reading it before i fall asleep because my head is racing, and my hands are sweating, and i’m writing angry anons at whitney where i know she’s just gonna reply with emojis and being too nice, so it isn’t even worth it, so you just continue on and read her next fic. and her next fic, and you end up with 16 cats in bed with you, and the subtle sound of a tractor in your backyard. yee-haw, she says. let me sleep, i say back
@sassquishes, aka dom, has a very internet writing style, and i’m not even sure how to explain it. it’s good – amazing, phenomenal, the type of stuff you twist your face into weird positions and try to capture everything, try to read deeper, but it’s only text, and you look really stupid doing. it has depth, and weight, and steps into the whole idea of dom as a person, and given he had a year on phil in regard to existing, and is whipping everyone into shape one ‘all adults settle down at 30′ trope at a time, dom is pretty 👌🏼
@phangirlingforphan, aka lily, is the person who created my internal dilemma about reading fanfiction before i go to bed. i can’t point out where i found out about her fics, and i’m almost certain that they were a sort of weird blotch of freckles that you just realized you had, but was there all along. they’re good, frankly, and i wish i could wax poetry about the way she captures stories and the way she paces fics, and the weirdly individual satisfaction you get from binging half of her fic page in one day and then realizing it’s four in the morning and you have work at six, but it’s just an experience you have to have for yourself. just, not before bed, especially if you have a life
@horrorphil, aka atara, only has one fic posted on their ao3, but it’s painfully amazing, and i suggest it to anyone who likes to read stuff and things. their way of writing is just as through and passionate as they are, and if you ever felt like someone was reaching into your belly and twisting around all your organs, it’s like that; they understand things about dnp’s characters that i genuinely have never seen in anyone else’s fics, and it’s that jarring reality where you miss the line between reality because it’s so in character. micro-mannerisms and hearing their voices in your head, it’s only slightly creepy
and, finally, the homeslices of homeslices, @wiinterberries, aka, annie. i met annie through a writing thingy where we bonded way too quick and i fell in love with her writing even quicker. taking pride in being the most british to ever british, given she works as an editor, you won’t find any mistakes after she betas her own damn work, and i don’t think there was any thing to fix to begin with. it’s intelligent in the way that witty puns are, but light enough that i could tread water with it tied to my back. good, and clean, and easy to read in the way that a firm grasp of language can only give. i give annie 3 pups out of 3
AND THIS IS FREAKISHLY LONG. i’m sure i forgot someone, but i’ve been working on this for ages, so i should probably Get My Move on; i’ll add more to this tomorrow, possibly, because i’m sure i’ll think of someone at 3 in the morning and scramble back
curse me, and my sudden but inevitable memory issues. hope these recs helped! 😀
